IBM and NEON Enterprise Software, Inc. Host Roundtable with Houston Businesses and Academic Institutions to Discuss Next Generation of IT Professionals
SUGAR LAND, TX. – June 13, 2006 –IBM and NEON Enterprise Software, Inc. (NESI) have partnered with Houston Community College (HCC), the University of Houston and several Houston companies to discuss the shortage of mainframe technical skills within the information technology workforce and outline the curriculum enhancements needed to address this problem.
The roundtable event, scheduled for June 15 at Houston Community College, is part of IBM’s academic initiative to nurture a deeper academic-industry partnership with leading universities. IBM and NESI are working with local universities and businesses to develop curricula that reflects the needs of the IT sector, provide internships that give students hands-on experience and address the impending shortage of technical experts, many of whom will retire during the next several years.
“The IT industry is predicting a shortage of employees with large system expertise in the near future, and to further compound this problem, there are very few educational programs available to train the next generation of mainframe technical staff,” said Don Pate, CEO, NESI. “Together with IBM, Houston Community College and the University of Houston we have formed this roundtable to discuss these issues and provide solutions to address this problem.”
Some of the companies who plan to participate in the roundtable discussion include ExxonMobile Corporation, The Methodist Hospital System, TSYS Acquiring Solutions and Texas Instruments.
The roundtable will be held at the System Administration Building of Houston Community College, Seminar Room B, located at 3100 Main Street in Houston. The June 15 discussion will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at noon. Companies interested in attending the roundtable event, or for more information about becoming involved, contact Don Odom at NESI at 281-207-4956.
