zNextGen Project Working and Planning Session
Have you ever wondered how everything works at SHARE and the zNextGen project? We sure have, and we decided to have this session to figure it out. Join us at this round table where we will match our Sessions with Chairs (and make other mysterious and fun decisions). This is a great time to meet the zNextGen volunteers and other zNextGenners. The volunteers are here to help organize Sessions that are hosted by the Project and to help launch you in your journey to network with other attendees and get involved with projects.

Presented by Kristine Harper, Developer, NEON

zNextGen Project Opening and Keynote
This is the opening session for the zNextGen Project and is open to all attendees. The project officers will take about 20 minutes to introduce what the zNextGen community is, describe our mission, and welcome new and returning members. This time will also be used to point out important zNextGen meeting points and activities throughout the week, as well as recommend some of the Basics technical sessions. The majority of the Project Opening time is reserved for the keynote speaker who will be covering an exciting topic of interest to the zNextGen community.

Lower Mainframe Computing Costs—in a BIG Way with zPrime
zPrime continues to be a viable choice for reducing the cost of mainframe computing. Learn how easy it is to maximize the use of your specialty processors, making your most expensive workloads eligible for processing on zIIPs and zAAPs. With the ability to make CICS, DB2, IMS, TSO/ISPF and batch workloads available to specialty processors, you can delay upgrades and gain control of your 4-hour rolling average by intelligently maximizing the use of your existing capacity. zPrime lets you control your costs by letting you control the use of your mainframe.

Virtualization Using Linux on System z: Tips and Tricks for successful z/VM and zLinux installation and configuration
Virtualization on the mainframe using zLinux is highly scalable and cost-effective, and is increasingly being used as companies consolidate servers and workloads to save money on server administration, power, floor space, and software license fees. As applications and workloads are moved from distributed servers to Linux on System z, migration project teams encounter a number of technical challenges. Learn how to avoid installation and configuration pitfalls with these tips and tricks for installing and configuring z/vm and z/Linux on System z – and avoid delay in your consolidation and migration cost-saving efforts.

Move IMS Application Work to Specialty Processors—in a BIG way!
Specialty processors are a proven way to reduce mainframe costs – a top issue for almost any mainframe organization. But until the release of zPrime, specialty processors were of limited value. Learn how you can expand the use of zIIPs and zAAPs with NEON zPrime and leverage them for IMS online and batch applications – plus more. It’s an easy way to increase capacity, reduce costs and rebalance mainframe workloads and service levels requirements.

Culturally and Technically Successful Consolidation
With large-scale consolidation efforts moving distributed LUW server workload to zLinux on the mainframe, your distributed Linux and Unix system administrators will often find themselves administering on the mainframe instead of distributed servers. The difficulties that arise are not just culture clash, there are a number of technical considerations as well. Join us for this session as we seek to ease this transition and answer the question: “How do you make your distributed Linux and Unix admins fall in love with the mainframe?”
